Michelle Mishenko LCSW
Raised in Northern Virginia, I attended the University of Virginia and earned a dual degree in Psychology and English in 2003. My professional path led me to Virginia Commonwealth University, where I completed my Master of Social Work in 2008, concentrating my clinical training within University Counseling Services. I am currently a Licensed Clinical Social Worker practicing in North Carolina. My background, prior to opening my private practice in 2023, includes serving as an in-home family therapist, a parent educator, and a counselor for birth parents. I also have deep experience supporting at-risk youth and navigating the intricacies of the foster care and adoption systems. These diverse experiences solidified my belief that true human connection is built upon a foundation of sincerity, empathetic listening, and profound compassion for every person I serve. My primary clinical goal is to offer a secure, non-judgmental, and welcoming environment where clients feel free to express their true selves. I operate from a strengths-based perspective, prioritizing radical acceptance and therapist genuineness as the most vital tools for fostering positive growth and healing.
My ApproachÂ
Teens: My approach with teens is to meet them where they are at, engaging with their interests and treating them with respect. In particular, I enjoy working with neurodivergent teens and teens struggling with stress management, interpersonal issues, gender identity, and mental health stability. I enjoy both teaching skills and providing teens with a friendly listening ear to support them in working through their concerns.
Adults: My approach with adults is similar to that of teens, validating them while gently stretching them toward further clarity of their concerns and situations. I enjoy working with clients struggling with anxiety, ADHD, Autism, Depression, trauma, grief, interpersonal struggles, life transitions, and identity.
Couples: I am certified in Gottman Method Couples Therapy (Levels 1 and 2), as well as DBT-trained in couples work. I enjoy working with couples on building their connection, learning effective communication skills, conflict management, and building shared meaning and future planning together.
Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) Trained: For processing trauma and assisting with nervous-system regulation.
I-CBT Trained: Specialty training on treating neurodivergent clients also struggling with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD).
